In Bulgarian folklore, the Samodiva are ethereal female wood nymphs who generally appear in groups of three. Unearthly in their beauty and eternally young, their eyes can bewitch, dazzle or even kill. Any man who lays eyes on a Samodiva instantly falls in love. Women who see a Samodiva fall into a suicidal despair, despondant they will never be so comely.

They like to ride deer, and if a huntsman accidentally kills a Samodiva’s deer, she will either blind him or be striken with a deadly disease.

On the first day of January a Dervish festival is held in the Bulgarian village of Varvara, located within the Stara Planina region of the Balkan Mountains. The Dervish, or Kukeri, dressed as hairy monsters, leave their homes at midnight and congregate in the centre of the village where they dance a spectacular Dervish horo dance. The aim of the horo dance is to chase away evil and magical creatures such as the Samodivas, in the hopes of ensuring a prosperous year ahead.

The tradition has been passed down from generation to generation for more than 300 years and is one of the few instances of a Dervish dance not carried out by the Sufi sect.
